The bonus for paying local taxes in full by 31 March

Paying local taxes early can bring a real discount, but the percentage isn't guaranteed by national law — it depends on your local council's decision.

What the law says

Applies to building, land, and vehicle tax, for paying the entire amount owed for the year in advance, usually by 31 March. The exact bonus percentage is set by each local council through its own decision — the law allows a bonus of up to a certain percentage (often cited as 10%), but it can be lower in some localities. Check your city hall's decision before assuming the legal maximum automatically applies.

Art. 462, 467 and 472 Cod fiscal.

How it applies, in numbers

Illustrative example: a building tax of 1,200 lei/year, with a 10% bonus applied by the city hall for full payment by 31 March, means a payment of 1,080 lei instead of 1,200 lei, if you pay it all at once instead of the usual two instalments (March and September).

Common mistakes

The common mistake is assuming the bonus is always 10% nationwide — the exact percentage varies from one city hall to another. The second mistake is paying partially by 31 March and expecting the bonus — it usually applies only to full payment of the annual amount, not a partial payment.
