Each city hall can add up to 50% on top of the base rate (Art. 489 para. 2 of the Cod fiscal) — check your local council's decision for your locality. Leave at 0 for the unmodified base rate.

Estimate, not tax advice. The base rate (lei/200cm³ for road vehicles, a fixed amount for watercraft) is the one from the Cod Fiscal, Art. 470, updated by Law 239/15.12.2025. The additional rate is set by each local council — without entering it correctly, the amount won't match the actual tax assessment from your city hall. This does not cover trailers, caravans, or vehicle combinations ≥12 tonnes (Art. 470 para. 6-7), which have separate tables.

How it's calculated

Engine displacement is divided by 200 and rounded up to the nearest whole unit (1,983 cm³ ÷ 200 = 9.9, so 10 units). The number of units is multiplied by the rate in the table, which depends on the vehicle category and the Euro emissions standard — older cars pay more at the same displacement. On top of this amount, the city hall adds its own additional rate, up to 50% (Art. 489 para. 2).

Special cases

Electric vehicles pay a fixed 40 lei/year, regardless of power. Hybrids with CO₂ emissions under 50 g/km get a 30% reduction from the normal rate for their Euro standard; those above this threshold use a dedicated table, slightly lower than the standard E6 rate.

Watercraft

Boats, leisure vessels, tugs and ships have a separate table (Art. 470 para. 8), with fixed annual amounts — no calculation based on engine displacement. The one exception is the "sport and leisure vessels" category, for which the law only gives a range (0–1,119 lei/year); the local council chooses the exact amount, just as with building tax — check your city hall's decision for the real figure.
