Vehicle tax — how much you save with an electric or hybrid vehicle

Vehicle tax for electric and hybrid vehicles is significantly lower than for ordinary cars, and the difference is felt from the first year of ownership.

What the law says

An electric vehicle pays just a fixed 40 lei per year, regardless of power — a fraction of the tax on an ordinary car, which is calculated based on engine displacement. A hybrid with CO₂ emissions under 50 g/km gets a 30% reduction from the normal rate for its emissions standard.

Art. 470 Cod fiscal, Law 239/2025.

How it applies, in numbers

Illustrative example: an ordinary car with a 1,600 cc engine pays tax calculated on engine displacement, usually a few hundred lei a year, depending on the local table. An electric vehicle pays a fixed 40 lei, regardless of power or value — the difference shows from the first year.

Common mistakes

The common mistake is not factoring in the long-term vehicle tax difference when comparing total cost of ownership between a combustion vehicle and an electric or hybrid one — the annual difference, though small in absolute terms, adds up over the years of ownership.
