Extra-EU package tax — why the 150-euro threshold changes everything
The difference between a 149-euro and a 151-euro package isn't just a few euros of extra tax — it's a complete change of the customs regime applied.
What the law says
Under 150 euros declared value, the package falls under the simplified regime: a fixed fee of 25 lei plus 3 euros per product category. Over 150 euros, this regime no longer applies at all — full customs duties plus TVA apply, calculated on each product's tariff category, usually a much higher cost and a more complicated customs process. If you're placing a large order, check the total declared value of the package in advance.

How it applies, in numbers
Illustrative example: a 140-euro package with 2 product categories pays 25 lei plus 2×3 euros (about 30 lei), a total of about 55 lei. A 160-euro package falls completely outside the simplified regime — full customs duties are calculated on each tariff category, usually a much higher cost and customs process.
Common mistakes
The common mistake is not tracking the total declared value of a large order, assuming the tax always stays under the simplified regime — exceeding the 150-euro threshold completely changes the applied regime, not just the tax amount.
